sesame_street_friendsThis week marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, a landmark, visionary program which forever changed both public television and programming for children.

Everyone has their own special memories of Sesame Street.  Hard to believe it’s older than Mo’Kelly.  But probably the FUNNIEST bit that comes to mind is when Patti LaBelle sings The Alphabet Song.  Ernie and Bert catchin’ the Holy Ghost!  Tambourines and all!  Glory Hallelujah!

The Lena Horne version is the one I remember as a child…

I was too old for Sesame Street, already 9 whole years old when it debuted, but I have many memories of catching pieces of it here and there, usually when there was a skit involving Kermit or the Grouch or, better yet, both of them. I also liked the number songs for being so dopey and not caring.

Come to think of it, that’s what I liked about the show in general. Corny as hell and couldn’t have cared less.

Thanks for sharing these gems. It brought so many pleasant memories of teaching my daughter and my students the joy of reading. Education academia must be just as creative today to inspire children to experience success on a daily basis. This is how we break the cycle of illiteracy for knowledge then makes children powerful!

Thank you for the A-B-C rendition with Patti and the muppets, Mo! That was the B-E-S-T! Thanks for honoring a legacy in literacy on your blog. Should I crank out another kid before my body says, “We don’t do birthin babies no mo,” I’m gonna inundate that youngun with Sesame Street! xoxo
