Alpha Kappa Alpha Responds to The Mo’Kelly Report

Alpha Kappa Alpha Rev12:4
Official Statement for Mo’Kelly from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority:

Kenitra Shackelford was a probationary employee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., who resigned her position rather than accept a one week suspension for breaking sorority rules. Because Ms. Shackelford has retained an attorney to represent her, we cannot comment further on this matter except to say that the Sorority and its officers have committed none of the wrongs that she claims to have occurred.

Melody M. McDowell
Chief Information Officer
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The Mo’Kelly Report appreciates how quickly the sorority leadership responded directly in regards to this issue.  And those who are “unappreciative” of The Mo’Kelly Report, you might want to take note of the quick response.  Just a suggestion.

I wish members of the Sorority would STOP tearing down one another especially on these sites. Let’s allow the legal process to do it’s job. Those women you speak so ill of are our SISTERS!!!

Comment by Monica

I’m going to jump in on this one. I don’t think anyone is “tearing down” another in terms of the what is being said, but there is an honest realization of the situation and irrespective of whether the parties are guilty or innocent, there is a depth of concern for the welfare of the organization.

In other words, this is very personal for all involved. And families disagree about what’s best for the family, although everyone loves the family. And if anyone has been in any plenary session for ANY of the Divine Nine organizations, we know this all too well.

We don’t agree and we especially don’t disagree “nicely.”

But in terms of the public discussion of these issues, there are two facets to consider. Yes, the legal venue will do its job, but the public discussion accomplishes two goals. First, it allows the wider body a voice that the internal machine did not. Secondly, it applies pressure on the organization to address these issues in a more expedient manner (for better or worse) than the court system will. Also the legal system is often manipulated by money and legalese to draw out and wear out the general body opposition. It’s an unlevel playing field for those in opposition.

But the public discussion is very important to any organization’s national body. It affects future sponsorships, future inductions of high-profile “honorary” members. It affects future membership recruitment. In short, it affects all of the interests of the organization.

The public discussion, although distasteful, is not a reflection on the whole of AKA and anyone with half a brain already knows this. This is about one administration and a handful of individuals. It is little different than any of the hazing lawsuits. It is not representative of the whole, but the actions of a few…a few in direct contradiction to the stated ideals of the organization.

There undoubtedly is corruption in all of the Divine Nine, let’s not kid ourselves. But how Zeta Phi Beta handled its situation has obviously influenced AKA and how this situation is handled will affect the future issues. So being steadfast now, despite the unpleasant nature of the issues, only ensures this to be a greater deterrent for future AKA administrations to even tread close to the line of financial impropriety and other organizations will watch themselves as well. We are all inextricably linked…remember that.

Although I may present some of this material in a humorous light, I am not laughing “at” AKA…and I’m sure nobody else is either. We share in the pain. Either we’ve been where you are now, or will be shortly. All of our organizations suffer from these issues, just haven’t necessarily come to light yet.

If AKA responded to me within 24 hours, then obviously what goes on here matters. You can either capitalize on it or ignore it. But the choice is yours.

Mo, I am an AKA and is very happy that you are breaking this story. Many of our members are unware of what is going. Many who are aware is just hoping that this will all go away. This lawsuit is costing lots of money. The law firm handling the case is one of the best in the country. We also hear that the judge assigned to this case is the best for this type of lawsuit. As you know, a lawsuit can take more than a minute, but I am hoping that your website will get more people involved and we have her removed. She can not continue to stay in office. The more people who know the sooner her remover will take place. I am hoping that she does not preside over our Leadership to be held in Alaska this coming week. I hate that Melody wrote those stupid comments. Bless her heart, she isn’t informed. She does what she is told to do. I hope they are reading these comments. The entire Leadership Team needs to go. Please continue to spread the information.

I am also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and I must say that I am extremely dissapointed in those Sorors we elected to LEAD the organization. In all of my 32 years in this beloved organization, we have never had to go through something like this. I applaud you (and the Sorors of the weeping ivy) for bringing this to the forefront. No, it is not pleasant but this is something that could not longer be contained “in house.” I will pray for my organization.

Families do not air their dirty laundry in a public forum such as this. Sorors should know better. Stop it.

Comment by sara

But…families (like the King family) who sue each other abdicate that argument. If the “family” doesn’t want a public discussion of legal (or illegal) issues, then the remedy is to either successfully address the “issues” prior to it becoming a lawsuit concerning MILLIONS of dollars or accept the fact that the problem is not the public discussion of PUBLIC issues (remember…lawsuit) but the problem is connected to the issues raised in the lawsuit.

I say that to say…it’s a bit unfair to chastise people for discussing it publicly, yet ignore the 800 lb elephant in the room better known as some FIVE current lawsuits. You can’t have it both ways.

You want to keep it internal, then create an environment in which sorors aren’t suing your own board, employees/ex-employees aren’t suing your present leadership, etc.

Not to hit below the belt, and I’m saying this with complete respect…but did you say the same thing when the multi-million dollar wrongful death lawsuit hit for the unfortunate deaths of the Ivy pledges here in Los Angeles?

Was THAT an “internal family” issue too? The lawsuit is the key. It’s no longer “family business” as is true with any divorce or custody battle. Once you play this out in the court system, it’s the public space and I think it’s wrong to chastise people for somehow not discussing it “internally.” Because clearly if that were an effective option, it wouldn’t have gotten to this point.

The response from Ms McDowell, AKA Chief Information Officer, is weak with no substance. If Ms Shackelford is not a member of the sorority, how does she break sorority rules?

Comment by Mary

Mo,the members of Alpha kappa Alpha do not have a clue as to how serious these allegations are. Because there are a law suits, all is not being told. You can do the research, the lawyers handling this case are the best in the country. There has been an out cry for the president to step down, this has not happened. At this time the membership will be convening in Alaska for a Leadership. It is a sad day in Alpha Kappa Alpha land. I am sure our donors are wondering about their donations and the founders are weeping. Wouldn’t you?

Dear Mo,
Word has it that some members of the AKA Board were prepared to vote to move aganist Barbara McKinzie this past weekend at the Leadership meeting in Alaska. However, when they arrived, she gifted the entire board with new knit suits (not even St. John’s.) It therefore appears that they have decided not to take action at this time. What cheap dates.

Comment by Happylill

I’ll wait and see what returns come from that meeting. Honestly, I don’t expect (and never expected) anything to happen prior to their boule.

This is all shame and a disgrace and I pray that the legal process will abdjucate the wrongly penalized sorors. I hope others who have been wronged by our sisterhood, members or otherwise speak up now. I feel it is best to address all at one time, so we can move forward and heal after this case is handled.

Comment by SororProfessor

Mo, how very fitting of you to refer to the King family. When I read of the lawsuit (King family) I was deeply saddened and yet almost immediately I thought to myself, “I guess they couldn’t solve it internally.” For those who do not know, court records are public documents. The prayer of the pink and green should be for justice to prevail, for all misdeeds to be brought to light, and for rectification of those parties wronged. It’s too late to hide the elephant.

Comment by Yvette in L.A. formerly of LA

As a previous chapter president with 35 years of membership I within the last two years left a chapter because of chapter indiscretions. I informed the headquarters in depth by letter and also to our regional director everything that was going on. It was handled immediately.

Growing pains are necessary along with tears. Keep in mine tears are part of a cleansing process and THIS TO SHALL PASS Sorors…Just pray for all of us.

Comment by Marty

fact of the matter is that this organization is an exceptional institution and has been since 1908. This should have been handled internally by the organization. Their legacy still shouldn’t be tarnished per the inspirational book Ivy an unauthorized history of Alpha Kappa Alpha at http://www.collegegreekbooks.com/twentypearls.html . See why this is only a minor stumbling block within the organization long road of success and successful leadership.
